The Ship Security Officer (SSO) is appointed by the security company and the ship’s master to ensuring vessel security. They are an important asset under the International Ship and Port Facility (ISPS) code and must hold certificates of proficiency for their role. The shipping company will appoint, on each of its vessels, a Ship Security Officer. These officers report to the Company Security Officer.  

As a Ship Security Officer, you are responsible to implementing and maintaining the ship security plan. This involves creating a concise flow of communication by liaising with the Company Ship Officer, as well as security officers from other ships, ports, port facilities and associated service providers. You must be competent in taking responsibility for all roles needed to implement the ship security plan.

These competencies may involve:

  • Conducting security inspections at regular intervals to ensure integrity of the vessel is maintained
  • Responding to and reporting threats and risks to the Company Security Officer
  • Making sure all crew have the required security and safety training and awareness
  • Ensuring all ship security equipment is properly tested and installed
  • Making amendments to the security ship plan
  • Coordinating other ship operations, such as the handling of cargo, to ensure that security is maintained
